BSP Drakes Badminton Club was created in 2016 with the merger of BSP Badminton Club and Drakes Badminton Club.
BSP Badminton Club was started in 1969 by a few employees of British Steel Piling Ltd, playing at Claydon High School. In 1970 the club joined the Ipswich and District Badminton league with a mens team, then in 1977 the club entered two more teams into the league, a Mens B team and a Mixed team. In the 1990's the club moved to Thurlston High school, then to St Joesph's and in 2009, Goal's Centre at Suffolk College. In 2016 we merged with Drakes to become BSP Drakes and moved to Ipswich School.
The Drakes Badminton Club began in 1981 when Stephen Kidd hired the hall at Whitton High School and invited his wife, dad, brothers in law and a few work friends to play. This was purely social badminton, with no thoughts of playing competitively. After several years playing in various (often cold and dingy) venues the club moved to the Deaf Centre on Fonnereau Road. By now others were joining, many of whom are still members and have become very good friends. As the number of regular players increased, the club (taking its name from the surname of one of the founder members) applied to join the Ipswich and District Badminton League. The Deaf Centre was a good venue spoilt only by the fact that the single court did not suit the old style of scoring. As a result the club moved to Orwell Park School for a good many years and grew in size eventually enabling them to have a second men's team. This was their first four court venue and was a testament to just how much The Drakes had grown in size and stature. An opportunity arose to play at Ipswich School which, thanks to the merger with BSP, remains its venue to this day.  A combination of members moving; changing work commitments; losing interest and long term injury in recent years led to a decline in membership which meant the club would not have been able to carry on without change. The Drakes has been a happy, fun, dramatic and often innovative club - the merger with BSP will enable the spirit of The Drakes to remain. Long may the spirit of the club remain.
